I’m Cori Gentry. I certified as one of California’s first Birth Boot Camp Instructors (BBCI) in 2012 and became an Evidence Based Birth Instructor in 2015. My husband and I were both born and raised in Monterey County and have settled in the Salinas Valley to raise our four sons: Milo, Ash, Indy, and Everett. Through the stories of my mother and family members I grew up believing that natural birth was normal. After studying Early Childhood Education at California State Monterey Bay, I became a childcare provider in 2005 and was surprised by how common cesareans and epidurals were among my clients. No one seemed to believe natural birth was achievable, and my hopes for a natural birth were often met with “You’ll be begging for drugs!” I married the pop punk rocker of my dreams in 2007, and on Valentines Day 2009 Eric and I were thrilled to find that we were pregnant. We immediately sought a comprehensive natural childbirth class and when we discovered there were none in the area, I knew I would someday offer one. My belief in the necessity of preparing for birth is strengthened as I watch each of my students replace fear with excitement for their baby’s arrival. My four births have been very different. I’ve birthed at 38 weeks and after 42 weeks, at three different local hospitals and at home, with doctors and midwives, medicated and natural. My births have taught me that the decisions one makes in childbirth are personal and unique to them. I believe parents deserve to learn their options from an objective resource, and receive compassionate support throughout that process. Advocating for options and safety in childbirth is something I live daily. I am the President of the Birth Network of Monterey County, I am a Co-Leader of the International Cesarean Awareness Networks (ICAN) of Monterey County, am Co-Coordinator for ImprovingBirth.org Monterey County, and on the Board of Directors of ImprovingBirth.org. I love sharing my passion and knowledge with parents who want to have an amazing birth!
